Project Management Gains Recognition

For as long as humans have joined forces to design and build things, the roles of establishing timelines, assessing available resources, and evaluating risks have been integral to completing those activities or projects. The emergence of project management as a critical investment in promoting project success is relatively recent, however. Increasingly, project owners are recognizing that proven, polished management approaches can enhance project execution and lower the cost of projects.

PMIAn organization working to advance project management skills is the Project Management Institute (PMI®). Founded in 1969, PMI is the world's leading not-for-profit association serving project management professionals and today has more than 80,000 members worldwide.

In the PMI publication A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (December 2000), project management is described as "the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements." PMI has identified five iterative and linked processes that promote successful projects: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, and Closing.

PMI also has defined nine areas of expertise needed by today's project managers. These professionals need management skills in the following areas:
• Integration
• Scope
• Time
• Cost
• Quality
• Human Resource
• Communications
• Risk
• Procurement

PMI Member Ethical Standards
